The King Is Dead

I was shocked and saddened to read the news that Nicholas Parsons had died today.

I was listening to Just A Minute only this morning, as I drove in to work.

At 96, perhaps his passing shouldn’t have surprised me so, but like the late, great Humphrey Littleton, it felt like he would go on forever.

And with Terry Jones going last week, the Grim Reaper’s 2020 Celebrity Calendar is already off to a good start.

I (still) miss Humph more than most.

      Indeed.
However, I think his seat is in very capable hands.

I am not sure how Just a Minute will continue, perhaps Giles Brandreth as new Chairman? It will certainly need someone with staying power, The News Quiz has definitely gone into decline since it started with the peripatetic Quiz masters/mistresses.
    RIP Nicholas Parsons.

      You’re right TA.
Miles Jupp was an excellent chair, as was Sandy Toksvig before him.
I know he’s the flavour of the month at the moment, but Nish Kumar doesn’t really carry it, for me.

When Humph died, ISIHAC tried several different chairs, none of whom really worked. But then Jack Dee came along and he fits Humph’s shoers perfectly.

Maybe the News Quiz just needs time to find the right replacement.

Giles Brandreth would be a good chair on JAM – he’s done it once before. But I think he gives better value as a player.
