Yesterday – May the wunth – was my birthday.

As is usual on my birthday, I bought myself a little present.

That’s it there in the photo on the left.

Ain’t it luverly?

That, my friends,  is an early 1960’s GPO Type 706, as you well know. Beautifully refurbished and fully working. Oh, you should hear her ring – proper bells!

I’d actually wanted a Type 746; y’know, the one with the improved regulator circuit. But I couldn’t find one in red. And I really wanted red.

I actually bought it for a little project I am working on, but I am just so enamoured with it, that I might just leaved it plugged in and sitting on the coffee table in the lounge.

If nothing else, it’s a conversation piece.

  2. Happy Birthday for a few days ago. Your new telephone is very lovely, but not as nice as the ” Viscount telephone” that was designed by my husband for Standard Telephones and Cables when he worked there. ( you could look it up and admire it?) It started life as a sketch on his knee one morning in bed ! (It was before the time of computer aided design). I still see them at St. Albans hospital occasionally…they have the beige wall mounted version. If he had a penny for all of them that were sold we would be quite well off! However, they made a fortune and rewarded him with redundancy a few years later!

      Yes, you mentioned this before. I think the Viscount is considered a ‘classic’ nowadays and was certainly ubiquitous in it’s day. We had loads of them in the exchange.

  3. Happy birthday, fellow Taurean. Aren’t lockdown birthdays just great?! The only problem with that phone, Masher, is that you can’t switch it to silent when it rings.

      I had a lockdown birthday: a bit like a lock-in birthday, but with less alcohol and without the police getting involved.
      Don’t want to switch it to silent… cos it’s good to talk. 🙂

  6. HB, again. A phone you say? That’s novel. Do you use it? We have a trimphone. I don’t know why, I don’t think we’ve every used it.
