The Big Sleep

Each morning, I have to take my daughter to work.

It’s twenty miles, straight down the motorway.

On a Monday and a Tuesday, it takes about an hour, due to weight of traffic.

An hour!

So, to get her there on time, we leave at about 06:30.

In order to leave at that time, I have to get up at 05:00 because it takes me an hour to have my breakfast, carry out my ablutions and get dressed.

Then I take the dog out for half an hour.

So, the only reason I get up at 5am is so I can take my daughter to work.  As such, you’d think she would have the courtesy to be ready at 6:30, wouldn’t you?

But no: every morning I find myself ushering, cajoling, urging and sometimes shouting at her to get her out of the door.  This morning, I came back from walking the dog to find her still in bed.  Still in bed, despite the alarm on her phone and despite me waking her before I took the dog out.

I did read somewhere that it’s a teenage thing… that teenagers’ biology requires them to have more sleep.

She’ll be twenty later this year.

I can’t wait till her birthday… mornings will just be so much easier after that.

  1. Haaahahahahaaa! I can help you here. I have two stepdaugters, 16yo and 13yo. Neither is capable of being ready to leave the house at 08.30 for me to take them to school. The other thing to tell you is that my 24yo daughter is *still* a difficult person to get out of bed 🙂

    • Is it a female thing, do you think? Certainly, my son has no problems getting up in the morning… despite him being a lazy sod.
